More than 200 representatives from colleges and universities in the Northeast attended the Northeast Colleges Conference on the Civil Rights Movement held on campus April 23 and 24. Speaking for the Undergraduate Council committee on national issues which he heads, Richard A. Joseph '65 said, "We consider this conference to be an expression of the Dartmouth College undergraduate commitment."
The theme of the conference was "The New Direction of the Civil Rights Movement" and speaking about that theme were some of the most important figures in the movement being discussed. Lawrence Guyot, chairman of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, gave the keynote address. His talk was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Noel Day '53 of Boston.
Other speakers before the student conference included Hosea Williams, chief assistant to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.; John Lewis, chairman of the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee; Samuel Leiken, the campus director of the Northern Student Movement; Thomas Hayden, chairman of the Newark Project of Students for a Democratic Society; and William Higgs, chief attorney for SNCC and the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party.
