JUNE 1965

There are a number of different civil rights and associated political groups in Mississippi, and most of them are usually identified by their initials. Founded in 1961, the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO) was to bring together the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC - the Rev. Martin Luther King's organization), and the Student Non-Violent Co-Ordinating Committee (SNCC). NAACP support had been limited, and in April of this year was withdrawn. At this time COFO relies on SNCC field secretaries in four of Mississippi's congressional districts, and on CORE workers in the fifth. COFO is best known for the Mississippi Summer Project in the summer of 1964, now works closely in the development of the Freedom Democratic Party (FDP). In some areas it receives a good deal of advice and assistance from the Delta Ministry of the National Council of Churches (NCC).
