The new Joshua A. Davis Trophy, to go annually to the Head Class Agent making the greatest improvement in a single Alumni Fund campaign, has been awarded to H.Sherwood Guernsey '31 for his work last year. Fund Chairman Rupert C. Thompson Jr. '28 made the presentation at the annual meeting of class officers in Hanover last month, and read the following citation:
This new Alumni Fund award honors Josh Davis '27, one of Dartmouth's most active and beloved alumni leaders and a former Fund Chairman. It goes to the Class and Head Agent making the greatest improvement in a single campaign. There can be little doubt that you and 1931 fully merit the Davis Trophy for your 1964 accomplishments. Last year, in your first campaign as Head Agent, the Class of 1931 took first place in the Group IV Green Derby competition and raised the third largest class dollar total of the 50th Anniversary Campaign - $51,301! The previous year 1931 had finished last in Group IV by raising only $25,000 — so 1931 doubled its giving in a single campaign! This "bootstrap" operation also produced 114 Century Club members to put 1931 fourth among all classes in this important category, and you were also ranked among the top ten classes in the number of $1,OOO and up donors. The Committee recognized with special appreciation the fine assistance provided by your Classmate and Special Gifts Chairman - George Nickum, but this was in every sense a class accomplishment requiring the best efforts of the 1931 officers and Executive Committee, a fine team of Class Agents and an unequalled response from the 1931 fellowship. For this magnificent record, and for the great encouragement and example it provides to so many other Dartmouth classes we are honored to present you and your Class of 1931 with the first annual Joshua A. Davis Trophy.
