OCTOBER 1966

The College's janitorial and grounds workers are now represented by a Hanover local of the Building Service Employees Union of the AFL-CIO. After several months of College-union negotiations, the Buildings and Grounds workers voted 151-126 to accept the union as their bargaining agent.

Although Dartmouth as an educational institution is not covered by the National Labor Relations Act, the College agreed that its workers had the right of self-determination and therefore would accept the decision if the majority voted for union representation. All but 20 of the 297 Buildings and Grounds workers voted.

The Buildings Service Employees Union's international representative, in an interview following the vote, said the College's cooperation was "very good" and that his union was "looking forward to a good relationship with Dartmouth on the part of its membership." The 360,000 man international union is the nation's ninth largest.
