William L. Wilson '34, Hospital Administrator for the Mary Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover, and Dr. S. Marsh Tenney '44, Acting Dean of the Medical School, recently disclosed plans to construct a prototype Mental Health Center at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic Medical Center.
The Community Health Center of 21,-795 square feet will be constructed on Maynard Street adjacent to and connected with the Hospital's present psychiatric department facility. This is about halfway between the College's Gilman Biomedical Center and the center of campus.
Plans for the new center were developed under the direction of Dr. Robert J. Weiss, Professor of Psychiatry and chairman of the Medical School Department of Psychiatry. Some $550,000 in matching funds were raised in gifts from private sources following a U.S. Public Health Service grant of $425,000 announced in June.
To qualify for federal funds the center had to be capable of performing the total function of patient care, psychiatric training and research, and also provide support both for general practitioners and community general hospital staffs.
