The educational pundits in the national journals have been so convincing in their portrayal of the serious, committed, graduate-school-directed college student perhaps because so many students today are serious, committed, and graduate-school-directed that the occasional prank successfully achieved comes as a more delightful shock than it probably should.

Last spring a group of undergraduate conspirators succeeded in turning the south face of the Baker Library tower clock into a Mickey Mouse watch. As dangerous as it was, if the description of the enterprise as smuggled out is to be believed, it nonetheless was satisfyingly imaginative. Last month another band succeeded in pulling off the trick again - with some innovations in both the plan of attack and materials. Early-rising Houseparties dates had the opportunity to see Mickey Mouse in all his glory, smiling benignly upon the campus.

The front railing of the Hopkins Center balcony is another favorite target for student pranksters. Large white-on-blue letters are placed across the front of the Center to advertise coming attractions, and they are obviously an irresistible challenge. The most recent rearrangement of letters told Sunday morning churchgoers that the Hopkins Center was offering BEER ON TAP AT 3:00.

A new aerial view of the Dartmouth campus, taken by Adrian Bouchard in October. Prominent in the photo because of theirsize and whiteness are Leverone Field House (right); the four units of Hopkins Center (center) at the south end of the campus;and just north of Baker Library tower, Gerry Hall (psychology), Bradley Hall (mathematics) and the new Kiewit ComputationCenter. Farther north and east of Baker is the new Oilman Biomedical Center adjoining the cluster of buildings of the MaryHitchcock Memorial Hospital. The newest dormitories can be seen at the left, behind Thayer School and overlooking the river.
