Charles J. Zimmerman '23 of Hartford, Conn., a Life Trustee of the College, has been named head of Dartmouth's Bicentennial Executive Committee. He succeeds Harvey P. Hood '18 of Boston, who retired from the Board of Trustees on June 30. Mr. Hood will continue to serve as honorary chairman of the observance.
Mr. Zimmerman, whose long record of service to the College includes just about every major alumni post there is, is chairman and chief executive officer of the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company. The Bicentennial Executive Committee, a trustee and alumni advisory group, is responsible for broad policy matters related to the celebration of the College's 200th anniversary in 1969-70 and the 150th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision in the Dartmouth College Case, handed down by Chief Justice Marshall on February 2, 1819.
A. Alexander Fanelli '42, special assistant to President Dickey, has been named executive secretary of the Bicentennial Executive Committee and also of the Bicentennial Planning Committee. The latter, headed by Frank Smallwood '51, Professor of Government, is a working group of faculty and administrative officers. As executive secretary of both committees, Mr. Fanelli succeeds Nichol M. Sandoe Jr. '45, who left in August to accept a new position as Director of Public Affairs for the Claremont Colleges in California.
