DARTMOUTH, like all educational institutions in these times, faces constantly growing demands and the increasing costs of operation that inevitably result. Alumni and friends as well as corporations and foundations meet this challenge in a variety of ways beyond the Alumni Fund. Following is a list of recent gifts, grants and bequests of $5,000 or more indicating the range of gift opportunities and sources which are involved in the support of the College.

Bequests

Trust estate of EDWARD TUCK 1862: $195,023 for the Edward Tuck Endowment. Dartmouth is still receiving major funds from her largest benefactor almost 30 years after his death and some 70 years after his first major gift to the College.

Estate of Miss Avis WHITTEMORE ROBINSON: $80,000 to establish Medical School scholarship fund in memory of her greatgrandfather, Dr. Jacob P. Whittemore, and great-uncle, Dr. James H. Whittemore, who received their M.D. degrees from Dartmouth Medical School in 1844 and 1862, respectively.

Estate of HENRY SIEGBERT 1919: $10,000, unrestricted.

Estate of HOWARD W. COWEE 1908: $5,000, unrestricted.

Gifts Subject to Life Income

THOMAS R. JONES 1918: $5,059, to add to the Thomas R. 1918 and Martha L. Jones Fund for general purposes.

HAROLD F. BIDWELL 1920: $9,919 to establish the Harold F. Bidwell 1920 Fund for support of the Tucker Foundation.

ARTHUR E. ALLEN JR. 1932: $17,818, to establish the Arthur E. Allen Jr. 1932 Fund for general purposes.

Outright Gifts from Alumni

RICHARD REMSEN JR. 1942: $5,243 to add to the William Clinton Story Remsen 1943 Memorial Scholarship Fund.

ALUMNUS, CLASS OF 1920: $60,687, purpose to be designated.

ALUMNI FUND - 23 gifts of $5,000 or more, totaling $151,324, were received for the 1967 Alumni Fund campaign.

Foundations

LUKE B. HANCOCK FOUNDATION: $12,500, payment of one-half of $25,000 grant to purchase an Electro-Analyser for Thayer School.

NICHOLAS AND PANSY SCHENCK FOUNDATION: $5,000, final payment of $15,000 pledge to underwrite a seminar on History of the Cinema.

THE DANFORTH FOUNDATION INC.: $13,200, Distinguished Teaching Award for Professor Joseph Harris of the Physics Department.

CARNEGIE CORPORATION OF NEW YORK $38,000, final payment on grant of $250,000 to support the doctoral program in Mathematics.

RICHARD KING MELLON CHARITABLE TRUSTS: $50,000, final payment on $250,000 grant to the Medical School.

Corporations

GENERAL FOODS FUND, INC.: $20,000 for the Thayer School, unrestricted.

INTERNATIONAL NICKEL COMPANY, INC.: $10,000, unrestricted, applied to the Faculty Fellowship Program.

PHELPS DODGE CORPORATION: $10,0000 to becused in the fields of geology and engineering.

FIRST NATIONAL CITY BANK OF NEW YORK EDUCATIONAL AND CHARITABLE FOUNDATION: $8,496, unrestricted, applied to the Faculty Fellowship Program.

POLAROID CORPORATION: $5,000, in support of the Polaroid Fellowship at Thayer School.

GULF OIL CORPORATION FOUNDATION: $5,000, in support of the Gulf Oil Fellowship at Tuck School.
