IF you are wondering just what year of its life the College is beginning this fall, it's the 198th.
With the Bicentennial not far off, getting this matter officially settled was of some importance, especially since "Dartmouth's 199th year" had already begun to appear in print in connection with the new academic year launched September 25.
Dartmouth College was granted its charter on December 13, 1769, and the selection of Hanover as the site of the College was not made until July 9, 1770, so there is sound reason for claiming that the college year ending in June 1969 could not be the 200th.
At any rate, it's official: December 13, 1969 is the Bicentennial date, and the academic year 1969-70 is the Bicentennial Year.
