Al Perkins '25 is the author of an "I Can Read It All by Myself" book, Don andDonna Go to Bat (New York: Beginner Books - Random House, 1966. 64 pp. $1.95). This is a book for the beginning reader that has a lot going for it: simple but engaging illustrations by Barney Tobey, a baseball theme for the boys, a girl succeeding in a boys' game, a carefully selected collection of words to tell an engaging story of how a twin sister almost loses, then saves the day for her brother's team. There is one jarring note, however. The author has the adult fans (presumably parents) boo twice when the young batters fail to hit in clutch situations. This may well be what happens at organized children's competitions, but the author, editor, and publisher might easily have spared young readers this touch of reality- and bad example of sportsmanship.
