THE statewide dinner meeting of Dartmouth alumni in New Jersey, hosted by the Dartmouth Club of Essex and Morris at Saddlebook on March 3, provided an appropriate occasion for presenting to Carlos H. Baker '32 of Princeton the Dartmouth Alumni Award recently conferred on him by the Dartmouth Alumni Council. Mr. Baker, Woodrow Wilson Professor of Literature at Princeton University, is a former member of the Council, a 1932 class officer, and the holder of Dartmouth's honorary Doctorate of Letters.
The Alumni Award was presented by Trustee John D. Dodd '22 of Hampton, N. J., who read the following citation:
CARLOS HEARD BAKER '32
Editor, book reviewer, poet, novelist, educator, philologist - your life is becoming everlastingly imbedded in the matrices of the printing press.
From stripling instructor in a Maine academy you have, during the span of two decades, achieved the highest post in Prince ton University's Department of English, that of Woodrow Wilson Professor of Literature. You have been Fulbright Lecturer at Oxford and a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship.
An admirer of Wordsworth, Shelley and the English Romantic poets, you have edited and written extensively of their literary efforts. Your book reviews have had front page coverage in the book supplements of the New York Sunday newspapers.
On your own you have authored books of poetry and novels, one of the latter having been chosen as a Book Club Selection. But your crowning achievement, which is not yet ended, will come from your intimate study, through research and worldwide travel, of Ernest Hemingway. You are to be his authorized biographer.
As a resident of the village of Princeton you have been named its Man of the Year, have served on the Borough School Board, and have been termed one of the community's "most energetic members."
For your alma mater you have found time to be Class Secretary for five years, Newsletter Editor for seven years, Alumni Council member for three years, and have also served on various ad hoc committees.
Already you have been the recipient of the degree of Doctor of Letters from Dartmouth a decade ago. This properly recognized your talent as pedagogue and author. We now expand this formal acknowledgment to include your expanding accomplishments as a solid citizen, piquant novelist, painstaking biographer, and steadfast alumnus by extending to you herewith the high honors of the Dartmouth Alumni Award.
Carlos Baker '32 (c) with President Dickey and Trustee John D. Dodd '22.
