JUNE 1967 JILDO CAPPIO, ALBERT C. BONCUTTER

This column, prepared in early May, is the last of the publication year and of my fourth year as secretary. I do not keep statistics on the number of classmates reported in the column, but my impression is that I had news on a goodly number and that more of you wrote to me than in earlier years. I confess that I try to provoke ideas a bit - although the column is really designed to report on significant milestones of personal progress.

I always enjoy getting news about one of you from another classmate. G. MorrisonHubbard sends me a single sheet on CharlesD. Doerr. On September 1, 1967, Charlie will have worked an impressive 35 years for McKesson & Robbins, Inc., national wholesale distributors of drugs, hospital supplies, industrial chemicals, and liquor. He has requested early retirement at that time, and his base will then shift from Bronxville to "Southern California," where he will be available for consulting assignments in personnel and financial management.

Our connections with the Establishment are noteworthy and rewarding: Howie Sargeant writes - "Most interesting recent development has been my election as a member-at-large of the Dartmouth Alumni Council. Attended my first meeting in Hanover in mid-January, along with Nate Pearson, CalFisher, and Will Allyn. Our joint session with the Trustees. (Tom Curtis included) was excellent, and I wish all of us '32ers could have the opportunity of becoming acquainted with Dartmouth of today. It was exciting and impressive. Bill Morton, a former Council member, also was in Hanover.

From lien White, "After many years in the hotel and restaurant trade, I have taken on the New England distribution of Litton Microwave and Infra Red Ovens (they cook foods in seconds rather than minutes and are now the number one seller). Also, New England distributor for Armour's prepared foods (frozen). I still operate two restaurants in Newton and Medfield, Mass. Daughter Donna is junior at Mt. Holyoke and Jay (13) and Janet (10) and Ruth, my wife, constitute my family and my hobbies. I live in Dover, Mass., as this is horse country but because of business pressures have not had time for what was my favorite recreational sport. I am hoping to make reunion."

With undue modesty, John Palmer gives us a good, full report by way of a postcard: "My son, Pete, and his wife, Diane, have just come up with a baby girl to go with their two boys; my daughter, Chrissie, will be graduate #2 (Pete was #1) in June from M.S.U.; daughter Patty is re-married and has three children. As of last September I am a widower and still living in the same house I built in 1940 in Birmingham, Mich.: I seldom see a member of the class - the last being Jim Miller who stopped in for an evening last year; and finally, that this might change if anyone else attends the Holy Cross game next October 7, and we can recognize each other!"

Frank Westheimer notes an important action: "The most newsworthy item I have been able to report for a long while is my appointment last March to the President's Science Advisory Committee. My research in chemistry continues to fascinate me. With my family, research, teaching, and PSAC, I am reasonably happy and unreasonably busy."

Mark Short, who is connected with the United Nations and lives in Greenwich, Conn. (Porchuck Rd.), has offered to take on the Newsletter assignment. We all owe him an advance debt of gratitude.

Bob Ryan will appear in three plays at Britain's Nottingham Repertory Theater in the fall. The plays will include one by E. O'Neill and two by Will Shakespeare.

Larry Collins has been appointed managing editor of "Wire and Wire Products," published by the Haire Pub. Co. Larry was formerly senior associate editor of "Machinery" magazine, a post he held for nine years.

Bob Harrison and Bob Fendrich both wrote to tell us that Bill Lieson, president of Valley Bank and Trust Company, has been selected as the outstanding citizen of Greater Springfield (Mass.) for 1967.

Ben Drew sent a postcard from Japan, where he and Sally toured, with Pete andRusty Knight.

Carl Ward reports on skiing in the Sierra at 7,000 feet on 14 feet of snow, usually with Bob Baumrucker '31. Carl plans to attend the '68 reunion.

From Milt Burnes: "Retired here in Sarasota 6 years ago. Tired of golfing and fishing, so just started a real estate and insurance office. Note my ad in ALUMNI MAG. Back to work again is great...."

Nathan "Bo" Wentworth, vice-chairman of the Continental Insurance Companies and president of our class, has been elected director of the Franklin Life Insurance Company.

Bill Allyn has been elected chairman of the board of directors of Blue Cross of Central New York. Bill is president of Welch Allyn Inc. of Skaneateles Falls, has been a member of the Blue Cross board since 1961.

Art Mayes sends the latest news: "Same job, President American Foreign Insurance Association. Some 6 months of each year spent travelling in 60-70 countries. Have just become a 'cliff dweller' - no more garden-lawn-plumbing etc., and much more time for golf. Daughter Peggy systems engineer IBM - being married July 8 to' Jos. H. Boyd Jr.. Colgate '60, assistant to Gov. Rockefeller."

Alex McKenzie gives us good news and opinions: "Still living with Wife No. 1 after 28 years. One son playing with computers near Boston. The middle one married and a surveyor. Youngest son in Viet Nam. Don't uke Ms being shot at and shooting but have no illusions about unimpeded, naked Communism. Sometimes wonder what would happen if we ever tried Christianity. Like my job, tolerate commuting, appreciate the days in New Hampshire; don't get enough time with the bagpipes; am grateful for excellent health."

Dr. "Fritz" Browning writes from Cape Cod, where he has been a year as director of the medical center at Wellfleet: "Life is much more casual but more intellectually stimulating. One son is teaching at Park's School in Indianapolis. One daughter had twin boys in December bringing the grandchildren to five. Another son graduating from Colby and entering Air Force. Last but not least is daughter who will be V-P of sophomore class at Wheaton next year. Helen and I are growing older but looking younger. The Cape does it to you!"

"I wonder when the American people are going to wake up and get back to the days of working to be the best or to be proud of your product instead of worshipping the $. Too much so-called intelligence producing too much psychology producing a weakening society."

Marv Chandler reports: "Son Tom '63, armed with a Chicago U. MBA, is with Gallo Wine in Calif. Son Dick with Princeton '64 BA and also a Chicago MBA is taking an extra year at Univ. of Louvain, in Belgium, for another advanced degree in international business. I am just plodding along reading gas meters on weekdays and playing mediocre golf on weekends. Carmen and I had a nice March vacation in the Hawaiian Islands...."

Our son, Jim '63, is receiving his MBA at Univ. of Virginia Graduate School of Business Administration and has accepted a job with Warner & Lambert in N. J.

By now, you should have sent your check to the Alumni Fund.

Have a good summer. See you in the fall.
