WORLD AFFAIRS REPORTS. THE NEGRO CRISIS. VIETNAM. RUSSIA VS. CHINA.

By George H. Stern '57. KeyIssues Defined in Depth. Assorted materials. Developed by Behavioral ResearchLaboratories and United Press International. Palo Alto, Calif.

The name of George H. Stern of the Class of 1957 has become very conspicuous in the country's high school history classrooms within the past year.

As editor-in-chief of California-based Behavioral Research Laboratories, the nation's largest producer of programmed texts, Mr. Stern has authored the first three units in a highly publicized and widely used new series, UPI World Affairs Reports.

Each of these Reports, which are issued monthly during the school year, handles a single "current events" problem. Mr. Stern's Reports so far are on Vietnam, the Negro Crisis, Russia vs. China. Reports scheduled for next year include Crime, Politics 1968, Drugs, Going to the Moon.

The Reports come to the classroom as a self-contained unit. A 30-minute tape recording provides color, realism, and excitement. Student programmed textbooks provide about 80 pages of background information. A teachers manual includes objective tests, lists of discussion questions, suggested teaching procedures.

Mr. Stern has written clearly and succinctly, but not condescendingly; the Reports are most useful to the average or better student in upper grades of high school. The purpose is not to provide "the answers"; on the contrary, the complexity of the problems is stressed. Students learn much valuable background data. More importantly, students learn that their opinions must be based upon the facts.

Mr. Stern is making a major contribution to a very important educational goal: training young people to handle intelligently the problems of the U.S.
