Worthington Heads Alumni Council
JULY 1967

DELWYN J. WORTHINGTON '26, of Tucson, Arizona, was elected president of the Dartmouth Alumni Council for 1967-68 at its 114th meeting in Hanover on June 16. As head of the College's alumni "senate" he succeeds George I. Davis '28 of Glens Falls, N.Y., who presided over the three-day gathering of the Council during the Reunion Week.

Mr. Worthington is chairman of the board of American Atomics Corporation, manufacturer of ion generators, self- luminous light sources, and teaching machines. He is also president of Arizona Finders and Factors, Inc., in Tucson. Before moving there in 1962 he was executive vice president of Cresmer and Woodward, Inc., newspaper advertising representatives in Chicago, a firm with which he had been associated for 25 years. He is past president of the American Association of Newspaper Representatives, and a director of the Union Bank and varied civic organizations in Tucson. He also is secretary of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Tucson, and represents the Dartmouth club officers on the Council.

To serve as vice president for the coming year the Alumni Council elected Ernest D. Grinnell Jr. '42 of St. Louis, vice president and general counsel of the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway Com- pany, who has represented Region 6, District 1 on the Council since 1964. J. Michael McGean '49, Secretary of the College, was reelected secretary.

The Council's executive committee includes the elected officers and four other members: William G. Allyn '32, Syracuse, N.Y.; Philip B. Swain '37, Seattle, Wash.; F. Warren Miller Jr. '40, Spring-field, Mass.; and Proctor H. Page Jr. '42, Burlington, Vt.

New Council Members

As new members-at-large to serve three-year terms until June 30, 1970 the Alumni Council elected Gaylord A. Freeman Jr. '31, Chicago; William H. Timbers '37, Darien, Conn.; Richard C. Everett '40, Atlanta, Ga.; Richard D. Hill '41, Boston; and Richard D. Lombard '53, New York City.

As chairman of the executive committee of the General Association of Alumni, Harrison F. Dunning '30 of Moylan, Pa., will be an ex-officio member of the Council for the coming year.

In other actions, the Council elected Daniel J. McCarthy '54 of Boston an alumni member of the Dartmouth Athletic Council for three years until June 30, 1970. To serve on the Board of Overseers of the Hanover Inn for one year it reelected Robert D. Harrington '26 of Worcester, Mass.

Last year's rainy opening for the Council's annual June gathering was repeated and the Wednesday reception scheduled for the President's garden had to be transferred to the Top of the Hop. The dinner that followed was held in Thayer Hall, with Mr. Davis presiding and Dean Carleton B. Chapman of the Medical School giving the principal after- dinner talk.

A highlight of the dinner was the presentation of the Alumni Council's highest honor, the Dartmouth Alumni Award, to William H. Scherman '34 and H. Reginald Bankart '35. The account of these awards and of two others made earlier to Victor C. Smith 'l7 and Donald F. D'Arcy '33 appears, with full citations, on the following page.

After meetings of the various Council committees on Thursday morning, a session of the full Council took place in Alumni Hall that afternoon. Committee reports were presented and then Charles F. Dey '52, Dean of the Tucker Foundation, spoke on "Brains and Turmoil Today's Undergraduate." A lengthy, lively discussion of the qualities and interests of the contemporary undergraduate followed Dean Dey's talk, and the session had to be halted to give Council members and their wives a chance to get ready for the barbecue supper in the Bema. The Dartmouth Players' productions of Thomas and Sally and Cox andBox attracted many of the Council later that evening.

Another meeting of the full Council on Friday morning was devoted largely to a "State of the College" address by President Dickey and a question-and-answer period after it. Mr. Dickey spoke primarily of the components of the forthcoming Bicentennial capital gifts campaign. A few remaining committee reports and the election of Council officers for 1967-68 concluded the session, which adjourned shortly after noon for a stag luncheon at the Dartmouth Outing Club House.

The make-up of the Council's standing committees for the coming year was announced. These working groups, active throughout the year, will be headed by the following chairmen: Alumni Fund, Ralph Lazarus '35, Cincinnati, Ohio; Bequests and Estate Planning, Truman T. Metzel '23, Winnetka, Ill.; Class Giving, James D. Elleman '43, Morristown, N.J.; Enrollment and Admissions, F. Warren Miller Jr. '40, Springfield, Mass.; PublicRelations, Eugene Katz '28, New York City; Regional Organization, John W. Barto '52, Concord, N.H.; AcademicAffairs, Howland H. Sargeant '32, New York City; Nominating, George N. Farrand '33, New York City.
