One More Year as Dean
OCTOBER 1968

DEAN Thaddeus Seymour announced in June that he will return to fulltime teaching at the end of this academic year when he will have completed ten years as Dean of the College. His decision, discussed with and approved by President Dickey and Dean of the Faculty Leonard M. Rieser, was disclosed at the final faculty meeting of the year.

"Next June will mark a decade of deaning for me," Dean Seymour said, "and I have decided that I would like to resume full-time teaching duties with the English Department." The announcement was made a year in advance, he said, to permit ample time for a successor to be named. He added that "it is my observation that this position is one that calls for periodic infusions of new enthusiasm, energy, and resilience."

"I feel the utmost devotion to Dartmouth," he said, "and infinite gratitude to the students and colleagues who have made these ten years so personally rewarding for me."

Dean Seymour was appointed Dean of Dartmouth College in 1959 after four years as a member of the English Department. He taught courses in creative writing, conducted a senior seminar on comedy, served as an English honors adviser, and for two years directed the Writing Clinic for students needing help in composition and writing. He came to Dartmouth from the University of North Carolina, where he received an M.A. degree in 1951 and a doctorate in 1955. In his graduate study, he specialized in 18th Century English literature. He earlier had attended Princeton University and was graduated in 1950 from the University of California at Berkeley. In addition to being Dean of the College, he has retained faculty status and now holds the rank of Professor of English.
