New Bridge in Grant
DECEMBER 1968

The first steel bridge in the Dartmouth College Grant, a 200-foot span over the Diamond River, just north of Errol, was formally opened November 7 and was named in honor of the late Perley W. Churchill 'O7 of Berlin, N. H. Mr. Churchill, who was ill with a coronary condition and could not attend the dedication, died November 25, but not without expressing his pleasure over the tribute that had been paid to his long years of timber management in the north country.

The November 7 ceremonies, presided over by College Forester Robert S. Monahan '29, were attended by officials representing Dartmouth College, the Brown Company, and the New Hampshire State Forestry Department, all of whom shared in the cost of constructing this first steel and concrete bridge in the Grant. The bridge will serve both sportsmen and loggers and will provide access to the Dead Diamond Valley for fire protection.

Perley Churchill worked for the Brown Company for 52 years, beginning as lumberjack and river driver. He eventually became woods manager and then general assistant to the vice president in charge of woods operations. He was the brother of the late Wendall Churchill '07 and the father of the late John B. Churchill '44, who was killed while climbing Mt. Blanc in 1952.
