Three Dartmouth seniors are among 24 Americans from colleges across the country who have been awarded Mar shall Scholarships for two years of graduate study in Britain, it has been announced by the British Embassy in Washington.
The recipients are Richard L. Buck of Beverly Hills, Calif.; William L. Lee Jr. of Amarillo, Texas; and John A. Tallmadge of East Orange, N. J.
Buck, a Senior Fellow in psychology and class president for the past two years, will study physiology at Trinity College, Oxford. Lee, a National Merit Scholar and varsity letterman in tennis, will study English literature at Lincoln College, Oxford. Tallmadge, a Senior Fellow in comparative literature, National Merit Scholar, and winner also of a coveted Danforth Fellowship for graduate study, has not yet completed his plans for graduate work in England.
The 24 Marshall Scholars this year were chosen from 678 candidates, and three awards to Dartmouth seniors constituted a signal honor. Since the awards were established by the British government in 1953 Dartmouth men have received twelve of them. The last time there were three Dartmouth winners in one year was in 1961. Each scholarship carries a $5000 stipend for travel, tuition, and living expenses.
