Contest Seeks Ideas On College's Future
JULY 1969

A student-faculty-administration group has announced a competition, with written entries and cash prizes, concerning the issues and problems raised by events of this past spring at Dartmouth. The group running the contest includes Peter Bien, Associate Professor of English; John Fitzhugh '70, editor of the Dartmouth Course Guide; Frank Smallwood '51, Acting Dean of the Faculty; Hill Anderson '70, president of the Dartmouth Christian Union; Carroll Brewster, Dean of the College; and James Knowles, Instructor in Economics. They propose that all interested members of the Dartmouth Community focus on the future of the College - the role of the student, the structure of the university, the College's place in society, its relevance to today, and how to move forward creatively, making use of the lessons learned from the recent confrontation.

The competition is open to all members of the Dartmouth Community - alumni, students, faculty, administration, and townspeople. Entries are due on September 30, 1969, and may be essays, critiques, poems, short stories, or other forms. They will be judged by a panel to be determined next fall. First prize will be $100 cash, with a total of $300 in prizes to be awarded. The sponsors of the contest hope that, given sufficient return and quality, the contributions could be made available in book form and then serve as a basis for expanded discussion next fall.

Entries should be submitted to Mrs. Grace Bogardus, Hinman Box 749, Hanover, New Hampshire 03755. They should be submitted anonymously, with an accompanying letter identifying the author, in order to assure fair and equal judging.

As the sponsors explain, "Everyone should be concerned with these issues. We view the competition as an effort to stimulate creative thought and expression, and we hope as many people as possible will participate."
