Actor Richard Wordsworth examines a priceless volume of poetry by his famous ancestor, British Poet Laureate William Wordsworth, during a recent visit to Dartmouth. With him (left) is College Librarian Edward C. Lathem '51. The book, given by John W. Little II '40 as a tribute to Dartmouth in its Bicentennial Year, has come to the College at a time when the 200th anniversary of the poet's birth is also being commemorated. It is a copy of Wordsworth's 1838 Sonnets inscribed by its author in the year of publication to Lady Frederick Bentinck, daughter of the Earl of Lonsdale, a patron of the poet, and it contains within its pages several corrections of the printed text, made in Wordsworth's hand, as well as two complete sonnets entered by him in manuscript on a back flyleaf. Richard Words-worth's inspection of Mr. Little's gift took place while the distinguished British actor was appearing at the Hopkins Center in a dramatic program, The Bliss of Solitude, based on the life and work of his great-great-grandfather.
