Lawrence E. Harvey, Professor of Romance Languages, has been appointed Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. His appointment will continue through June 1971.
Professor Harvey, who has served as Associate Dean of the Faculty for the Humanities since 1967, was chosen by Provost Leonard M. Rieser '44, who has occupied the positions of both Dean of the Faculty and Provost for three years at the request of former President Dickey. Professor Rieser will continue as Provost with primary responsibility under the President for the faculties and academic affairs of the College. Prof. James Hornig will continue to be responsible for graduate studies and, as Associate Dean for the Natural Sciences, will work closely with the Dean of the Faculty and the Provost. Several additional appointments will be made in the office in the weeks immediately ahead.
Professor Harvey, who joined the Dartmouth faculty in 1955, is a graduate of Western Reserve University and earned his master's degree and doctorate at Harvard. He has also studied at the University of Paris and at the University of Turin, Italy, while serving as cultural affairs officer for the U.S. Information Agency in Turin in 195152. An authority on contemporary French literature, Professor Harvey has been a prime mover in the development of the Dartmouth Foreign Study Program.
