The Dartmouth Alumni Council, gathering in Hanover January 14-16 for its 121st meeting, will have an especially important agenda that includes the nomination of three Alumni Trustees and discussions of coeducation and of financial strategy in this period when the College's operating costs are outracing income.
The key discussions will be held in a joint session with members of the Dartmouth Board of Trustees, who will be meeting in Hanover the same weekend. Charles J. Zimmerman '23, chairman of the Board, and Dudley W. Orr '29, co-chairman of the special study committee on coeducation, will lead the joint session on Friday afternoon, January 15. A report on the Third Century Fund will also be heard at that time.
As an innovation, the Board of Trustees has invited Council members to a special business session, and this will be held immediately after the more public meeting in Alumni Hall. Since his inauguration President Kemeny has encouraged alumni to make known their ideas and opinions about the operations of the College, and in the special meeting with the Trustees members of the Council are expected to present the views of their alumni constituents.
The Alumni Council is constituted to represent all regions and segments of the Dartmouth alumni body, but many alumni are not aware of the identity of. the Council members serving as their representatives. For that reason the ALUMNI MAGAZINE is appending to this article the complete roster of the Alumni Council for 1970-71, and addresses are given so that alumni, if they wish, may communicate with Council members and inform them of ideas and opinions they would like to have offered at the Hanover meeting with the Trustees.
The scope of Alumni Council responsibilities is indicated by the eleven committee meetings on Thursday, January 14, that will precede the first general session on Friday morning. The areas covered are nomination of Trustees, athletics, public relations, enrollment and admissions, alumni awards, academic affairs, bequests and estate planning, class giving programs, regional organization, class organization, and Alumni Fund.
Dero A. Saunders '35, president of the Alumni Council, will preside over this 121st meeting of Dartmouth's alumni "senate." In addition to the two business sessions of the Council and the two joint meetings with the Trustees, the three-day program includes a reception and dinner for all groups in Alumni Hall on Friday night.
The Friday night dinner will give the Alumni Council a chance to pay tribute to some members of this year's championship football team. All seniors on the team will be guests of the Council. Their presence will be doubly appropriate since the after-dinner program being arranged by Dean Carroll Brewster will deal with various undergraduate activities and projects. One other feature of the after-dinner program will be the presentation of two Dartmouth Alumni Awards, highest honor of the Alumni Council.
