Administration Survey
OCTOBER 1971

A survey of Dartmouth's administrative structure and operations in the interest of present effectiveness and future needs has been initiated by President Kemeny. The six-month survey has been undertaken by the management consulting firm of Cresap, McCormick, and Paget, one of three companies invited to submit bids. It is being underwritten by a gift from an anonymous alumnus.

The President has called the study "a prudent examination of all nonacademic offices of the institution." Leo Kornfeld, vice president and director of educational services for the firm, says it is unique in its "preventive medicine" aspect. "Cresap, McCormick, and Paget is called in usually on a troubleshooting assignment to identify the cause of a persistent problem and to propose solutions," he commented. In this instance "there is no crisis at Dartmouth College, and the institution has been and is administering itself well."

The team of six people has already begun a detailed examination of the organizational structure of the President's office and other administrative offices such as those of the Provost, the Dean, the Treasurer, and the Business Manager. The Kiewit Computation Center, the Hopkins Center, the Tucker Foundation, Baker Library, and the Hanover Inn will also be included in the study.

The consulting firm will also help evaluate the educational cost, and space implications of coeducation, should the Board of Trustees approve the change in November.
