Ground-breaking ceremonies for the James D. Vail Medical Sciences Building were held August 23, with officials of the College and the Medical School and close relatives of major donors taking part.
The Vail Building, scheduled to open in mid-1973, will double the facilities of the Medical School. The eight-story glass and brick structure, which will be attached to the present headquarters, will house the Departments of Biochemistry, Medicine, Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Physiology, and Surgery.
The present structure, to be renamed the. Remsen Building, will be renovated as part of the same $7,500,000 contract, made possible by a grant of $5,424,817 from the National Institutes of Health and gifts, among others, from Mr. and Mrs. Foster G. McGaw of Evanston, Ill., the late Martin J. Remsen '14 of Hartford, Vt., and James C. Chilcott '2O of New Vernon, N. J. The building is named for Mrs. McGaw's first husband, the late James D. Vail '20.
The completed project will permit a projected enrollment of 200 students, almost double the current student body, by the late 1970'5.
