A lengthy news release is at hand about Walt Bernstein who spent the summer at the "College on the teaching a new generation of aspiring writers how movie films are written and produced. Walt's been free-lance writing since undergraduate days and considering that he was "fired" from The Dartmouth while an undergraduate ('cause he panned the movie "Lost Horizons") he's come a long way. Besides the movie scripts for "Fail Safe" and "The Molly Maguires," both of which enjoyed considerable success, he also wrote a book of World War II sketches entitled "Keep Your Head Down." Now Walt's in the midst of his first novel, a movie script in which Messrs. Harry Bellafonte and Yves Montaud are tentatively set to take the leads, and a group of TV scripts for CBSTV on a new series of "You Are There" shows.
Paul Hurley has once again expanded his insurance business in Quincy (Mass.) for the third time since 1967. Paul formed his own agency in 1946 and incorporated it in 1970. Since then he has purchased three other agencies and merged them into his. An insurance man's life must be an enviable one because he's also currently chairman of the board of the local golf club and past president of the tennis club. On the more serious side, Paul was former chairman of the board of the Quincy City Hospital and is a member of the board of the Hancock Band & Trust Co., The YMCA and the Visiting Nurse Association.
Just a year ago this month in this column we announced that Walt Dance had been made a senior vice president of G. E. Now I'm even more delighted to tell you that Walt's been elected a member of the board of directors of that august company! Another '4O promotion concerns Dr. Seymour Wheelock who's been promoted to associate clinical professor of pediatrics on the volunteer faculty of the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Sey is director of ambulatory services at Children's Hospital in Denver and has been a member of the medical faculty at the University since 1947. Still another promotion in the news is that of Sam Williams, a general partner of the firm of Brundage, Story and Rose in New York, who's been elected a member of the board of governors of the Investment Counsel Association of America. The final promotion (or election) news for this month's column is that the board of the Federated Dept. Stores has been increased to 18 by the addition of Executive Vice President Herb Landsman.
Regrettably ye scribe was unable to attend the fabulous festivities in Hanover in conjunction with the Yale game. As a class executive committee meeting to begin organizing for our not-too-distant 35 th reunion was also held, and as it is of import to us all, I've imposed on our good Class President Bob MacMillen to finish off this month's column with the story of that weekend. So, as they say on the "Tonight" show, "Here's Bob -------!"
And "here" they were too! Before, during, and after the game, 42 classmates were on hand, mostly enjoying some or all parts of the informal reunion arranged in conjunction with the biggest game of the season. Easily winning long-distance travel honors were Barbara and Ted Ellsworth all the way from lowa. But Bill Reardon,Scotty Rogers, Oscar Acer, Jim Scott,Turk Lake, Ed Schecter, and DickGoulder also made trips of appreciable dimensions in order to be on hand. Certainly the arrival of Bob Gensel and Ben Bacon in a fancy mobile home, complete with a well-stocked pantry, was the most unique mode of transportation. Sid Harrington, normally flying 747's to Europe, seemed content to sit behind the wheel of his Caddy to get here. The Fun City delegation was comprised of John Manley, Johnny Crandell, Jay Weinberg, Diz deSieyes, Joe Dunford, Tuffy Reeves, Jack Little, Jack McDonald, Sam Williams, Art Ostrander, Don McMahon, Harry Howard, Art Mountrey, and Ray Hotaling. Others from nearer by included Jack Willson, Jack Moody, Bud Swenson. Mickey Miller, Manny Mansfield, Bob Graham, Elmer Browne, Fred Porter, Bill Squier, Stet Whitcher, Staff King, Joe Sudarsky, George Burleigh, Gordie Wentworth, and Don Rainie. It was a gala to remember for some time and I can only urge you not to forget to sign up for the next one when the call to colors comes out soon after the first of the year. You'll be amazed how young we all look!
But not all the recent Hanover visitors were here at the same time: Dave andCarole Davenport stopped mountain climbing in the White Mountains long enough to take in the Holy Cross game and the local foliage. Another Cleveland couple, Jack and Kay Ingersoll, came up to help their freshman son celebrate his birthday.
I will close my part of the column by reiterating the accolades for Art Ostrander and his crew of assistant agents which were expressed at the Class meeting before the Yale game. Art not only achieved a second place standing in our Green Derby race but realized 100.2% of our dollar objective. A loud huzzah for that and all the long hours required to reach that happy state. He does it with such good grace too! Cheers, and back to Hugh.
