Verbal fluency in American Indian languages will henceforth satisfy language requirements for graduation, under a change voted by the faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences and approved by the Board of Trustees.
Although Indian languages were not specifically referred to, the change in requirements was first proposed by Indian students.
The old requirement was that a student must take three terms of foreign language study or demonstrate proficiency equivalent to three terms at the college level. His proficiency was to be tested in both reading and understanding and use of the spoken language.
Under the new provision, the student must, in oreder to be exempt from foreign language course work, be able to understand and use the spoken language and demonstrate ability to read "a language other than English" if printed texts exist.
When there is no department or program in the chosen language at the College, as is true in the case of Indian dialects, Dean Carroll W. Brewster will arrange for testing the student.
