John S. Learoyd (left), Head Agent for the Class of I9ll, received the Fred A. Howland Alumni Fund Award from Alumni Fund Chairman Robinson Bosworth Jr. '37 at the annual dinner of the Boston Alumni Association on March 23. The following citation accompanied the award:
When you put an experienced financial officer on a job that deals with money something exciting usually happens—and with authority! The Class of 1911, for many years, had performed consistently well in the annual Alumni Fund and in the 1968 Campaign ranked second in the Green Derby finals of Group I. At this point John Learoyd was tapped to become Head Agent for his Class. He soon learned there was a challenge before him. "How in the world can a Class our age do better than second place in our Green Derby? Well," he said, "the only position that's better is first! First place in my first year on the job? We haven't won our Green Derby since 1936!"
John accepted the challenge nevertheless and the 1969 Campaign ended with the Class of 1911 in first place with a Participation Index of 159% and 107% of the Dollar Objective.
"Now, what do I do for an encore?" John asked himself. Just to prove to himself that the 1969 performance was no fluke, the 1970 Campaign saw 1911 in first place again, this time with a 156.4% Participation Index and 123.8% of the Dollar Goal!
Congratulations, John Learoyd! The Alumni Fund Committee is pleased to present to you the Fred A. Howland Award as the outstanding Head Agent of a Class more than forty years out of College—60 years, in fact!
