In the November 7 elections, Hanover again demonstrated its strong Republican leanings. It gave Governor Sherman Adams '20 (R) 1,084 v°tes to 331 for his Dartmouth-Democratic opponent, Robert P. Bingham '25. Senator Tobey polled 1,098 votes to 258 for Emmet J. Kelly (D), while Congressman Norris Cotton (R) of Lebanon got 1,117 Hanover votes to 281 for his Democratic opponent. The town again turned down a State liquor store, 606 to 566, but upheld the thriving business of the Tanzi Brothers by approving the local sale of beer, 798 to 362
Students and townspeople, who normally pay very little attention to the Connecticut River, watched it with some excitement early in November when the new Wilder Dam closed its gates and started to dam up the water. The widening and deepening of the river produced some marked changes in spots, but those who envisaged the creation of a great lake at the foot of West Wheelock Street were wrong. However, by the standards of this contrary country (apologies to Ralph Hill '39), the changes have been great enough
A change which the students will have to make the best of is the discontinuance of door-to-door mail delivery in the dormitories starting January 1. The post office has announced that it will make a single delivery daily to some central spot in each dorm and that distribution from that point will be the responsibility of the College. The Undergraduate Council has taken the problem under its wing and has appointed a special committee to work with Treasurer John Meek in establishing a new delivery system
One tradition goes and another reappears. The Ledyard Canoe Club has announced that during the five-day Thanksgiving recess it will revive the trip from Hanover to Long Island Sound that was an annual feature before 1934. Ten canoes will reenact the river journey that the Club's namesake. John Ledyard, made down the Connecticut back in 1773
The national educational fraternity Kappa Phi Kappa had its beginning at Dartmouth in 1922, but the Alpha Chapter became inactive in 1936 and remained so until last month. In ceremonies in which Frank Peak, the national secretary-treasurer, took part, the Dartmouth chapter was revived on November 14 with 14 student and three faculty members. A delegation from the University of Vermont came to Hanover to reactivate the Alphas, thereby switching roles with the Dartmouth students who journeyed to Burling-ton years ago to establish the second chapter at the state university. Kappa Phi Kappa now has 58 chapters with over 15,000 members
The 1951 Winter Carnival theme will be "The Call of the Wild," and the call has already gone out to the student body to submit ideas as to how this can be translated into a snow statue. For the period in which Carnival falls The Old Farmer'sAlmanac says "Wax up your skis, there will be snow to your knees."
