The English Department has instituted a Foreign Study Program, in cooperation with University College, London, to begin with the 1972-73 academic year.
Ten students and Professor Samuel F. Pickering Jr. will spend the fall and winter terms at University College. The students, most of whom are English majors, will live in college dormitories, but not as a group.
They will take two courses each term at University College, primarily within a core curriculum of studies in Shakespeare, Chaucer, and the Renaissance. Those with special preparation in the three areas will have the opportunity to branch out into other fields. A third course, under Professor Pickering's direction, will consist of cultural field trips, independent reading, and a journal.
Mr. Pickering, an assistant professor who has been on the Dartmouth faculty since 1970, is a specialist in Victorian literature. He spent two of his undergraduate years at Cambridge University.
