Dero Saunders '35 (1) received the Alumni Award from Council President Josiah Stevenson IV '57 at the Council Banquet last month. Following is part of his citation:
Dero. with no academic background in journalism, economics, or history, you have become the Executive Editor of Forbes, one of the most respected financial writers in the trade, and a distinguished historical editor - The Portable Gibbon, Mommsen's History ofRome, and The Autobiography of Edward Gibbon. Some years ago you began teaching English at Hunter College with the vague notion that in your twilight years you might seek the restful shade of the groves of academe. Your current reactive and initiating energies indicate that the need for rest has not yet come.
You have served your Class and the College as assistant class agent, as co-editor of the class newsletter since 1966. and for six year.s as a member of the Alumni Magazine Advisory Board. You were a member of the local executive committee of the Third Century Fund, a member of the Alumni Council for three years - chairman of its Public Relations Committee in 1970-70. and president of the Council in 1970-71. You have contributed two sons to Dartmouth, David '63 and Richard '69.
With abiding appreciation of these achievements and n grateful recognition of your continuing loyalty and vigorous leadership, we give you the Dartmouth Alumni Award.
