Department of Credit Where Credit Is Due. The other night I had the pleasure of thumbing through a somewhat old college address list containing the names of Dartmouth Alumni Officers as of October, 1973. Though the list is somewhat out of date now, it seems appropriate to cite those unsung members of the Class of 1948 who at that time had taken on various responsibilities in various Dartmouth alumni organizations about the world. These men were doing their bit for their College on the Hill, and we other '48s owe them thanks for the time and effort they were putting in for us and for Eleazar.

One of the busier of the group has been JohnHatheway, member of the Alumni Council for four years, secretary of the Dartmouth Club of New York, member of the Board of Overseers of the Hanover Inn, and a frequent official visitor in Hanover. Another Alumni Council member, one of five elected from the region composed of the Middle Atlantic States of New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania plus Ontario and all foreign countries not specifically included in other districts, was Lloyd Krumm, who lives in Franklin Lakes, N.J. (near TedThornton). Lloyd was also an active member of the Council's Committee on Enrollment and Admissions, as well as area enrollment director covering seven districts, a fair portion of his state of New Jersey. Two district enrollment directors (North America plus the Canal Zone are divided into about 130 districts from the enrollment standpoint) were Ed Leede in Midland, Texas and Fred Loomis in Cheyenne, Wyo. These men handled two of the larger districts in terms of square miles if not in density of prospective Dartmouth men and women. Many other men served in particular areas of enrollment districts. One of these is Pete Smith who, during the most recent year of alumni interviewing of candidates for the freshman class of 1979, organized the area covering Natick, Sudbury, Wayland, and Concord, Mass. This area is one of the largest in the nation in terms of the number of freshmen applicants in any given year, and Pete saw to it that every would-be freshman had a chance to talk to an alumni interviewing committee, this better to enable him or her to know more about the College, and Director of Admissions Eddy Chamberlain and his associates to know more about the candidate. Many other '48s not mentioned here served on the interviewing committees.

Among alumni club officers about the world must certainly be mentioned Bob Neuburg, secretary of the Dartmouth Club of Peru in Lima, and Dave Karukin, secretary of the Dartmouth Club of Thailand in Bangkok. Closer to home, Hal Shea was job placement chairman (particularly important during the present day economic depression) of the Dartmouth Club of Central Vermont in Montpelier. Ed Leede, in addition to his enrollment work in Texas, was liaison officer of the Permian Basin Alumni Club. (We're not sure what the duties of this office were). Ferd Obrenski was academic affairs officer of the Alum Association of Long Island, located in and around Garden City. LouSpringsteen, one of the Class' fine ministers, held the same office as Ferd in the Bergen County, N.J. alumni club, located in the Ridgewood/Teaneck/Franklin Lakes area (where Woody De Yoe also lives). Another '48 holding down the job placement chairmanship in his club was Bill Campbell in the South Shore Dartmouth Club covering the area around Cohasset/Scituate/Marshfield south of Boston, also inhabited by the Dick Leggats and DickMargesons. Bud Munson, prior to his transfer to the New York area where he took on the tooth-pulling task of '48 class agent, was president of the Dartmouth Club of Washington in Fordville. Nor can we neglect Warren Daniell, president of Thayer School's Dartmouth Society of Engineers, a body having its annual meeting every fall, usually in Hanover, which has much to do with establishing policy for this worthy institution.

Barney Hoisington is another '48 in a key position as director of Financial Aid for the student body in Hanover. And, as every '48 knows, the good work Barney can do in assuring that the very finest, most competent and responsible young men and women are able to attend Dartmouth is greatly affected by the annual Alumni Fund Drive which Bud Munson and his ACL's push each year.

Vince Vayo, who lives on Saddleridge Way in Dunwoody, Ga., forwarded a fine letter which we excerpt as follows. "Am in the middle of my 21st year with IBM and feel as young and energetic as my first day on the job.... Moved to Atlanta in July, 1974, bought some wooded property, had our dream house designed and built, and moved in in February this year.... Helen and I have two lovely teenage daughters, Laura and Denise, who are rapidly learning to speak with a southern accent, y'll.... delighted to expend southern hospitality (mint julep?) to my classmates wandering around these-a-here parts." Vince, you may be overrun, especially by some of your nearby fellow '48 Georgia crackers including Ed Gingrich and Maury Witherspoon, both also of Atlanta, Jim Hudson of Augusta, and Sam Jackson of Macon.

Was delighted to see my longtime Dartmouth roommate, lan Macartney, here in Miami for a few hours between planes a few weeks ago. Mac's an international petroleum exploration executive with Amoco, based in Chicago, and he was on his way to Algeria, going there via a slight deviation to Venezuela where he and DickHowe '46 spent the weekend fishing in the backwoods near the Brazilian border. Although more than ten years had passed since I had last seen Mac, he hasn't changed much, still has that pungent sense of humor, love of the great outdoors, and the will to be active, the latter in spite of somewhat reduced physical mobility that resulted from an injury followed by a serious operation in the early 60's. The eldest son of Mac and Carla, Hal, graduates in Hanover this year with the class of 1975, 27 years after his father attended his last class in 1948. How the scythe of time moves along the way.

Please, please send in your Alumni Fund investment. Every amount, large or small, helps. An old litany perhaps, but ... Nuff said. Til October.
