JUNE 1982 Vail K. Haak Jr.

I have always been of the belief that most people view their year as having commenced in January and ended sometime after Christmas Unless, of course, financial statements and tax payments and bottom lines have caused them: relate to the pulsing of their fiscal periods rather than to the changes in the solar declination.

But now I know a year that begins in September and ends in June and ask not about Jul and August. School years, long known teachers, students, parents, and, yes, even class secretaries are the only constant chronicler ! time. And this, dear friends, is the last gasp ! my penultimate year.

Our 35th reunion, one year early for those you who care about such things, will be held on June 13—16, 1983. Another is a series of demcratic elections will produce a totally new assemblage of class leaders. Your nominations, as always, are encouraged. In my final year as your secretary I hope that those of you who have thought about writing me will do so. Durirthe past few years I have made a number t phone calls to long-silent classmates. Many : these conversations have been reported in this column; some have been politely forgotten, li you would rather talk than write, send me your phone number and the best time to call, and I will do the rest.

Sometimes these calls produce surprises, as happened last week when I tried to contact John Stockwell. I had expected to find John enjoying a magnificent spring day on Cape Cod, where he listed himself as presides of Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. In classic institutional fashion I was advised that Mr. Stockwell was no longer working there. A quick call to his last known address found Nancy still home but preparing to join John in Saudi bia in June. The Saudis had just comply an 862-bed hospital to go with their new medical school in Riyadh, and John has been appoint" executive director. The hospital will start operations next January and John is presently ing on gathering a staff. The family spend the summer with John and then decide whether the two youngest children will stay or return private schools in the States.

And while we're on the subject of changing life-styles, Punchy Thomas told me about his ,-orts to contact Jim Krentler on a recent trip Honolulu Jim has a new condo at the foot of Diamond Head, adjacent to the Outrigger CaClub But Jim, who is divorced and the retired president of Great Western United, Great Western Sugar, and Shakey's Inc., was in Denver skiing. When Jim is in Hawaii, he's wind surfing and dating. And to all of you who consider it a good day when you miss the rush hour crush, have a great summer. I'll be back in September for the start of my last year.
