The Dearth of a Secretary

About the time our class turned thirty I received a call from a guy named Bert: "I've got a job that most think dirty, But I guarantee that you can't get hurt."

Our new class officers were all in place Except for the office of secretary. Working for Wagner was no disgrace So I gladly accepted without a worry.

The files arrived from my predecessor With some yellowed letters and an old obit, But nowhere an item to prompt a roar Or even cause the lamp to be lit.

Two years have come arid two years have gone And through many clippings and journals I've pored.

Some columns were bad but a few have shown That when you wrote you were truly adored.

So, in spite of the efforts of a loyal few The "gems" are spent and the files are bare. The answer dear classmates lies solely with you. Your letters and cards are my total fare.

Then promise me only one simple note Ofjob, or joy, or lively times. Opinions also are our grist And controversy aids my milling.

If apologies are due For time spent searching for classmates names. I do! Will you?
