Two previous benefactors of the College, the Jewett and the Ankeny families, have recently given Dartmouth further financial support by endowing new professorships. A professorship in art will honor the late George Frederick Jewett, former head of Potlatch Corporation, and another in economic policy will commemorate Minneapolis businessman DeWalt H. Ankeny '21. The sons of both men, George F. Jewett Jr. '50 and DeWalt H. Ankenyjr. '54, were prominent participants in the creation of the professorships that will honor their fathers.
In announcing the new endowments, President McLaughlin described the educational goal articulated by each family. He mentioned that it was the hope of the Jewett family that the new chair in art would be used to appoint "a distinguished artist of the highest caliber who will inspire students through his or her creativity and ability to communicate." McLaughlin also cited the younger Ankeny's intention that the new economics professorship "should contribute to the students' knowledge of the basic principles upon which the economic policies of the United States are based," and stressed himself the importance of such a recognition of "the essential role which the free enterprise system plays in assuring the economic well-being and vitality of our society."
