President Honored
August 1946

AT THE 146TH comemncement exercises of Middlebury College in June, President Dickey received the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from Dr. Samuel S. Stratton '20, president of the college. The citation for Dartmouth's leader was as follows:

John Sloan Dickey—graduate of Dartmouth College and the Harvard Law School; President of Dartmouth College and worthy successor to a truly great educator—we welcome you to our honorary fellowship, in part because of the position of eminence which you hold but more significantly because from the day you embarked upon your distinguished career in the legal profession you have been willing unselfishly to offer your specialized knowledge, your keen intelligence and your talent for administration first to your country in the Department of State during the war years and now to leadership in developing the character and intellect of young men of the post-war era.

For these reasons, it is my privilege now to confer upon you the degree of Doctor of Laws, with all the rights, privileges and honors here and everywhere appertaining to that degree.

Among other recent honors which have come to President Dickey, he has been elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a Trustee of the Institute of International Education. He has also accepted membership on the Committee on International Political and Social Problems of the Chamber of Commerce of the United States. The honorary degree from Middlebury was his third, Tufts and Brown having honored him similarly.
