Dr. Gregory S. Prince Jr., who came to the College in 1970 as director of summer programs, has been named vice provost. In his new post he will have major responsibility for academic resource development on an institustion wide basis and will expand and supervise programs in continuing education.
An American Studies scholar, Prince was graduated magna cum laude in 1961 from Yale, where he also earned a master's and a doctorate. While serving in a series of administrative posts at the College, most recently associate dean of the faculty and associate provost, he has continued to hold an appointment as an adjunct member of the history department.
The emphasis on continuing education in his new post is one Prince is enthusiastic about: "My overall philosophy is that continuing education should not be peripheral to the major role of the institution, but should enhance its central mission. It should reinforce undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs and not be undertaken at the expense of those programs. A liberal arts education is an education you should pursue all your life. Thus continuing education programs can be an integral part of that education."
