Word has just reached us from the wilds of Labrador that Dr. Hugh Lena had a furious fight with a 15-pound Atlantic salmon last August and lost. According to the account from a source who asked not to be identified, Hugh hooked the monster while fishing with his physician-brothers, Paul 'SO and Dick '53. The fish leaped clear of the surface several times before smacking against a boulder and ripping free of the hook, an eyewitness said. The source said it was unlikely Hugh would boast of the encounter.

The annual Dartmouth Alumni Fund drive is in full swing, and the early results are beginning to trickle in. As of March 1 (this is being written on March 10), the class of '43 was at 38 percent of the $120,000 goal. So far, there have been 72 contributors, who have given a total of nearly $46,000. That puts the class fifth in the Green Derby of seven classes in the 1940 decade. About half that total was in "leadership" gifts of more than $1,000, and about $8,000 came from matched gifts. Our class lagged in the Green Derby throughout the campaign last year and ended first.

Speaking of contributions, there's a renewed push to get alumni to become athletic sponsors by contributing to a fund for bringing promising athletes to Hanover. Under Ivy League rules, there's a limit on how much the College can budget for this purpose, but no limit on the amount alumni can donate: Other Ivy institutions do it.

We have only sketchy accounts of the deaths of two classmates, Eugene Roitman on December 8 and James M. Mullins the first week in February. Gene Roitman's last address was Savona, Italy. He was reported to have died of a heart seizure. Jim Mullins died in St. Louis, also of a heart condition. He had been ill for a long time. More details in the obituary column of this or a subsequent issue.

The four children of Phyllis and John (Jug)O'Connor threw a surprise 40th wedding anniversary party for them April 20 at a Framingham, Mass., restaurant. Two of the O'Connor sons came from California for the festivities, a third came from Albany, N.Y., and daughter Kathy coordinated the affair. A delegation of '43s was scheduled to be on hand for the event, including Connie and Mike Thurston, Stacey and John Koslowski, Gloria and Ted Driscoll, Claire and AndyCaffrey, and Lorraine and Eddie O'Brien. We have no late word on how many actually attended.

The Dartmouth alumni clubs of Manchester and Nashua, N.H., are sponsoring a panel discussion among leaders of the campus communications offices at a joint meeting May 22 in Merrimack, N.H. The two clubs have invited the editor of The Dartmouth, the College's director of alumni affairs, the editor of the Alumni Magazine, and the editor of TheReview to discuss major College issues: These will include the status of athletics, the Indian symbol, the dormitory "cluster" concept, Reserve Officer Training Corps instruction, minimum housing standards, and College investment in South African securities. I've agreed to moderate the program.
