The March issue of Adweek had a nice article on Pete McSpadden, president and CEO of Dancer Fitzgerald Sample. DFS was Adweek's selection as advertising agency of the year for 1984, and it credited Pete's bridging the gap between the account and creative functions as being key to DFS's success. (If you are not familiar with the agency, you'll recognize Wendy's "Where's the beef?" commercial; that's DFS.) The only thing wrong with the article was that they had the names under the picture of the principals reversed unless Pete has grown hair. Congratulations, Pete.
The aforementioned Adweek article also ranked all the ad agencies. It gave Ogilvy and Mather straight A's on all counts and an overall A+. O&M was the only agency to be so graded. As you are undoubtedly aware, ol' Ken Roman hangs out at O&M, as mentioned in this column last month. Congratulations, Ken.
Still on Madison Avenue, the February 26 New York Times ran a picture and a nice article on Charlie Blakemore, who has set up shop as Blakemore and Killough. It explained the genesis of the new ad agency as "escaping the process," which Pete and Ken have done so successfully. I am pleased to report the NYT ran the names under the pictures correctly (the bald guy on the right was Killough). Congratulations again, Charlie.
E. John Rosenwald (AKA F. Scott Fitzrosenwald by the Boston Globe, if one can remember that far back) was elected a director of Orion Pictures Corporation. If you would like to get first-run movies or television programs, see Rosie. Nice going, Rosie!
It is tough to get out of New York for this issue! A late bulletin was received announcing that Herb Roth had become of counsel to the law firm of Kensington, James, Ressler, and Zampino on Madison Avenue.
Out of New York, but not far away, in Stamford, our own Thomas R. Loemker of Fairfield, Conn., was elected president of Pitney Bowes Business Systems. Tom joined PB in 1955 and has served in a variety of data processing, planning, and operating positions. In this new position he is responsible for PB's mailing, copier, and inserter systems operations in the United States.
Don't forget the Alumni Fund. Help us come out on top in the Green Derby. The totals are $5,458,000, raised against a target of $l2 million, and 23 percent participation in comparison to a goal of 70 percent. So, we have a way to go yet. Give a hand to DickMcDonough!
Almost time to take the storm windows down and to put up the screens, rake those remaining leaves, and sand and paint the bottom of the boat. Time does go by!
