A Message from the New Trustees' Chairman
September 1986

Accepting this wonderful responsibility gives me the chance to focus on and hopefully influence efforts to improve the process of communication between the various elements of the Dartmouth Community. I am persuaded that our opportunities will be realized and our problems minimized to the extent that we perfect our lines of communication. Objectives of clarity, consistency, lack of ambiguity spring to mind and lead easily and equitably to accountability.

The Trustees will remind ourselves that listening is a critical element of quality communication, and I hope to serve in a framework that encourages reflection and debate on what we hear.

The foundation on which Dartmouth stands is so solid that no efforts to tinker with the superstructure will long weaken the basic strength. It is with this conviction tempered hopefully with "that humility that opens men's minds to wisdom" that I relish this new opportunity for service.
