Women's Studies Program grantedpermanent status
A year-long review of the Women's Stud- ies Program culminated with a faculty vote favoring permanent status. The program was scrutinized by College faculty, outside scholars, and several committees, including the Executive Committee of the Faculty.
In a report prepared for its review, the program defined itself this way: "Through its feminist perspectives, Women's Studies examines the political, historical, economic, social, and cultural experience of women; charts the cross-cultural heterogeneity of this experience, and explores the implica- tions of gender and sexual difference." The report noted that Women's Studies is now considered an established academic disci- pline, citing the widespread acceptance of Women's Studies in academia.
Program co-chair Lynn Higgins does not expect the program will appoint faculty or grant a major in the near future. The pro- gram insures an interdisciplinary approach by relying on faculty from other depart- ments. By not offering a major, the program has greater freedom in instituting new classes. If a major were offered, certain classes would require cyclical repetition.
