Our recent request for information from the artists and entrepreneurs in the class brought a wonderful illustrated letter from the computer of Tom Maremaa in Albany, Calif. Tom writes: "After almost 15-years writing novels, plays, and non-fiction, I decided to start my own software company a big plunge into entrepreneurial waters. So Infinity Software, Ltd. was born about a year ago. I started in the proverbial garage, then moved into a warehouse space in Emeryville, Calif., not far from where we live in Berkeley. Now, a year later, we are celebrating (envision a computer graphic featuring balloons and champagne).

"We've been developing and publishing software for the Macintosh and Amiga personal computers. Our first program, Grand Slam Tennis, I designed myself and worked for six months with a programmer to finish. Our next program, Galileo, is an astronomy simulation written by a NASA physicist (astronomy was one of my loves at Dartmouth), and this summer we're coming out with five more programs, including Shakespeare, a desktop publishing program for the Amiga. Hot Stuff!

"So it's been quite a year: ten people working for me now, enough midnight programming in Pascal for a lifetime. My wife, Mollyanne, and my daughter Alexa, who just turned two, still can't quite believe the transformation from writer/author to computer entrepreneur, speaking in various codes and algorithms. Neither can I. Thought I'd let you know: there is life/change after 40." Let's hear from some of the rest of you who have made recent changes like Tom.

This month also brings news of major appointments for three of our classmates. John Steinle has been named Vice President of Marketing and Communications by Rockresorts, Inc.. After college John earned an M.B. A. at Columbia before working for Rockresorts for ten years. Most recently John has been a vice president at Lord, Geller, Frederico, Epstein, Inc. in New York.

Dr. Roy Erickson has been named Chief of Medicine at New Britain Memorial Hospital. After college and medical school at the University of Vermont, Roy completed internship and residency work at both Harlem Hospital and Mary Hitchcock. Most recently at Mount Sinai Hospital, Roy has been director of the Mount Sinai University of Connecticut Health Center Ambulatory Care Services.

Many of us followed the press coverage of Rob Dressier, when as mayor of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., he had to deal with the annual invasion of college students over spring break. Having survived that annual ritual and the other problems of municipal government, Rob has been named to the Florida Board of Regents by the governor. In accepting the appointment to the Board, which is responsible for the educational system of the state, Rob referred to the importance of his Dartmouth experience in setting his own expectations for higher education. In particular, Rob will be concerned with the quality of educational services in Broward County.
