Eighty-five tiers worth of freshly sawed eight-by-eights were used to frame the 1988 Dartmouth Night bonfire. In the interest of reduced air pollution, burning old creosote-soaked railroad ties was to have become just another memory. A mighty blaze rather quickly consumed the brush and debris interior, producing the usual smoke and cinders. After the flames died, the bonfire framework remained standing, smoldering but intact . . . proud testimony to the construction skills and spirit of the great class of '92. Undeterred by yet another challenge, Buildings & Grounds restored the green to scorched normal by early Saturday morning, leaving all to wonder whether the new tradition of reusable bonfires will stand the test of time.

A good group of's7s had formed-up earlier in the evening to join the parade from Memorial Field, around the green to Dartmouth Hall. During his Dartmouth Night speech, Buddy Teevens announced freshmen and JV football wins over Harvard, prompting cautious optimism that a new era in Dartmouth football had begun. He thanked the administration and students for their contributions to the results, as well as all other "athletic supporters."

On Saturday morning Jack Hall opened the annual class meeting and bloody mary event by congratulating Jack Cramer for his achievements as head agent, and Jack outlined plans for going after another Green Derby win. Dan Goggin advised that about .half the $50,000 minimum has been raised to endow a scholarship named for our class. He also reported on the class treasury's contributions to a program which underwrites campus visits for prospective student-athletes, and to a class project that finances social and educational events at the Ripley-Woodward-Smith dormitory cluster. Reciprocating our support, cluster residents hosted a barbecue lunch for '57s before the Harvard game.

The class reconvened for cocktails and dinner at the new Shaker Village restoration on Lake Mascoma. Clark and Happy Griffiths arranged for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres around the restaurant bar starting at six, followed by an excellent dinner the likes of which couldn't even have been contemplated in the Upper Valley in 1957.

Celebrating their first Dartmouth Night with '92 offspring were Wayne and LindaKakela, Dick and Linda Levene, and Boband June Macdonald. Other '57s back for the weekend were Wayne and Cindy Andrus, Adam and Gittan Block, Bill Breer and daughter Katherine, Jack Cramer, Billand Ann Edgerton, Harvey and ArlineEpstein, Burton and Beverly Foster, Danand Connie Goggin, Clark and HappyGriffiths, Jack andjoan Hall, George andAnn Johnston, Keith Nolan and son Eric, Herb and Laura Roskind, Tom Schwarz,Joe and Jane Stevenson, Charlie and Susan White.

Next on the class calendar is a mini-reunion in New York the weekend of January 27-29. Specially priced rooms will be available at the Yale Club. We'll hear more from Hanny Mason about cocktails and dinner on Friday, brunch on Sunday, and the possibilities for Saturday entertainment and dining. It should be fan.
