In September Barney Hoisington retired as Dartmouth's longtime director of financial aid. This son of Eleazar deserves the plaudits of his'48 classmates, and the College at large, for a job well done.
Barney arrived in Hanover in 1971 and became the financial aid director three years later at a time when the College's scholarship aid program totaled $2.35 million. It's now $12.8 million, and more than ever reflects Dartmouth's commitment to student diversity and needblind admission. In spite of this growth, these policies are clearly threatened by economic pressures, according to the President's Committee on Priorities and Financial Aid to Year 2000—whose chairman was Barney Hoisington.
Barney's manifold contributions have been recognized with the Harland W. Hoisington Scholarship Fund, established by the College in honor of "his selfless service to the College and to countless undergraduates." Although Barney and Heather have retired to their sheep and horses outside Norwich, you can be sure he will keep busy in local volunteer work and as a Justice of the Peace. If you'd like to contribute to the fund, make out a check to Dartmouth College and send it to Melanie Norten at 210 Blunt Hall, Hanover, NH 03755.
