PROF. RAY V. LEFFLER of the Economics Department died at St. Vincent's Hospital in Toledo, Ohio, on April 10. He was 49 years old and had been in ill health since the last week in February, when he was forced to relinquish his teaching duties. Following a month in Dick's House he returned to his home in Leipsic, Ohio, at the start of the spring recess and shortly after was taken to the Toledo hospital where he died. Funeral services were held in Leipsic on the afternoon of April 13.
Professor Leffler had been a member of the Dartmouth faculty since 1919, starting that year as instructor in economics. He was made an assistant professor the following year and in 1924 was given full professorial rank. A graduate of the University of Michigan in 1915 and the recipient of a Master's degree from there, he had taught at Michigan for two years just prior to his coming to Dartmouth. He was assistant professor at Yale for the academic year 1921-23 and served as Visiting Professor at Michigan in 1928-29. He had also taught at Columbia and lowa during summer ses- sions.
Professor Leffler was the author of the volume Money and Credit which was published in 1935 and had made special studies for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and for the United States Chamber of Commerce. An authority on banking, he had written numerous articles and had served as newspaper consultant. He was a member of the American Economic Association and the American Association of University Professors. He was born in Leipsic, Ohio, on February 28, 189 a, the son of Daniel M. and Emma (Pfister) Leffler. He was unmarried.
