Korley isn't your typical Dartmouth dog. She rarely frolics on the Green, swims in the fountain outside of the Inn, or sleeps in a classroom. Moreover, Korley is the only dog on campus that has Dean of the College Edward Shanahan's permission to live in a dorm. (We will not mention those dogs that live in dorms without permission.)
Korley, a guide-dog-in-training, is on campus because her trainer is Susan Urben '88, a 21-year-old biology major. Getting Korley on campus wasn't as simple as driving up to Hanover and unloading a term's supply of milkbones. New Hampshire law did not give guidedogs-in-training the same freedom of movement as working seeing-eye and hearing dogs. Urben successfully lobbied Governor John Sununu and several state senators and got the law changed.
Urben is currently putting Korley through the first phase of guide-dog training known as Basic Obedience and Socialization. The deans say there is no basis to the rumor that freshmen caught rushing the visiting stands during football games will be enrolled in the same course.
