Change is the theme of this month's column. Eric Chaisson, in The Life Era: CosmicSelection and Conscious Evolution (Norton, 1987), succinctly states a nice paradox: "Change is the root of all organized stability." The trick, of course, is to discover the organizing principle; in other words (to change the metaphor), to "go with the flow" in such a way as to discern the current from the river, for what is current today may be mere eddy tomorrow. (Apologies to Polonius, who really knew how "to crack the wind of a poor phrase.")
Charlie Russell writes of "many changes, dynamic challenges" now that he has moved from New Jersey to Chicago, where he is looking after risk management/insurance for the Eagle Industries conglomerate. His new address: 273 Abbotsford Court, Glen Ellyn, IL 60137. Andy Pincus tells us that he is working on two new books while continuing his duties as a music critic in the Berkshires. DougJohnston has, with a new marriage, added two more grandchildren, ages 5 and 6. JimRobinson has helped change things for the better in Tennessee, where as president of the Chattanooga Healthcare Council he has succeeded in reducing medical costs for some 20,000 people.
And speaking of health care, several of us who attended Class Officers Weekend in April bus-toured the rapidly progressing new Hitchcock Clinic/Dartmouth Medical School site south of Hanover off the road to Lebanon. This enormous facility is truly impressive and, given its size and location, is bound to cause profound changes in its area.
This summer's mini-reunion will also represent a change a change of venue from Tanglewood to Williamstown, Mass., where Jack Giegerich, Nase Hurowitz, and Batch have put together an outstanding program of activities for the August 3-5 weekend: socials with '51s from Williams College; visits to museums or an antique show; lunches, cocktails, dinners; shopping, tennis, or golf; theater. Batch has already provided you with details in our newsletter, so let me simply remind you to make your own lodging reservations and to call Nase (508/798-2160) to allow him to plan for your attendance at the Saturday cocktail party and dinner.
And looking ahead to the future, the best way to keep up with the changes in our collective lives will be to come to our 40th Reunion in June 1991: "The Spirit of '51 Is Coming Back!" Al Mori and Joe Boissy and others are planning the greatest three-day affair since your honeymoon! While the main business will be camaraderie, there will also be a changing of the guard with a slate of new class officers to be voted into place for the ensuing five years. If you, or anyone you know, would care to serve in such a useful capacity, won't you contact HankSanders, our nominating committee chairman, at his home? His address and phone: 57 Deepwood Road, Darien, CT 06820, 203/655-8884. Thus...while "the beat goes on" ... "there'll be some changes made."
Take care, be good to yourselves, and keep in touch.
