Call this a "Walk in the Aegis Woods," circa 1941. Hello, John Kelly and Doug Wheale, exiting Baker with notebooks in Rind. Hurrying past Hoppy, Pudge, and a WASPy looking tribe of trustees, there's a clearing full of Funny-Funny-Faculty, everyone a white male in keeping with practices prevailing at the time. It was later on, visiting with eccy's Joe McDaniel in December 1941, when he asked if we'd heard of the absent-minded professor who unbuttoned his vest, pulled out his tie and wet his pants.
Pow-wowing on governance and legislation, Paleop's 15 seniors circle an open fire to consider the agenda prepared by President Pete Keir with the assistance of the other officers: Ab Combes, Bill Lowry, and MortMcGinley. Nearby is the Interfraternity Council, including Brummy Miller, who is remembered as a College boxing champion; the Treasurer's Council with John Nevius, not to be confused with twin brother Martin, among its members; and Jim Jacobs presiding over Interdormitory Councillors, as well as George Ladd and Larry Thompson, representing all of us on the Council on Student Organizations. But what are Bob Krieger and Lou Young doing on that truck without a football? Oh, yeah, they're part of BillDanforth's Undergraduate Fire Squad, whose members "sleep with warm clothes laid out ready for the howl of the fire whistle."
Lots of vivid scenes in the Aegis Woods, courtesy of Norm Locke and Joe Rich. Pictures, too, byword and camera, in The D, made possible by local and national advertising, respectivley managed by Dick Arneson and Al VanWie under Business Manager TomOakes. At Jacko advertising is managed by Lance Ballou and business by BruceFriedlich. The directorate of the Dartmouth Pictorial includes editors Bill Broer and JackBrister. Out of doors, among other chubbers of the Outing Club, Bill Jamison, Bud Riley,Bob Rock, Line Wales, Rowland French and George Simpson. Also out of doors are carnivalers of the final winter, including MabeCornwall, Bob Fry, Dave McGaughey and Chick Weisker. (Who's dating Queen Joan Walters?) Winter winners of a white "D" on a green sweater: Alex Salm, skiing, and BillHammond, skating, to recall a couple of them. Then eventually comes the spring, and BillReeder is one of two dozen '41ers to paddle a Ledyard canoe, but the oars belong to JackDelander, and Mac Smith has just stepped down as commodore of the Corinthians.
If it's too cold out there, try the Players and let President Mills Ten Eyck put you to work with Vic Schneider on publicity, Ira Skutch on costumes, or lighting with Jack Beaumont. Look over there, in the glade, where Arnie Bartlett is in the cast of "Outward Bound" with a set designed by FrankSimpson. Or do you prefer music? See FritzCluthe, manager of the Glee Club. Or the Barbary Coast, George Cruze on bass, and the Green Collegians, Bill Best on the bone.
There's a lot going on: e.g., Bill Burgard debating; Bob Hess taking pictures; HarryButterworth, Dartmouth Christian Union; Rich Fisher, Press Club; Dick DeCou, Natural History; Ed Pierce, Le Cercle Francais; and Hans Froelich, Germania. Holden Higbee produces for College Films, Bill Freeman is part of Ambas Americas, and Frank Watters may be seen wielding epée. There are mucho sports going on elsewhere in the woods, but we're at the end of our walk. Carpe Diem.
