Steve Winship reports that the number of will-come and hope-to replies for our 50th Reunion was 164 as of who- knows-when. There's room for growth, and the total is rising: a note from Roger Epply, whose full color print "Sleigh Rally" is in the gift shop at the Woodstock Inn, says that he'll be on hand for Five-O and also at this month's mini October 10-12. Won't you join him? Bud Hart would have been joining Rog, you can be sure, had not death intervened, as I learned from Pat's letter forwarded by Dan Provost. We'll be remembering Bud, and all of our deceased classmates, at a reunion memorial service which will most completely bring every one of us Together Again. And that includes Pat, I hope, as well as Marge Gotshall, Hap Koenig and other widows.
You might see Ira Skutch, author of I Remember Television, who writes that he found, visiting Hanover a couple of years ago, "the school vibrant and the students stimulating." Or Tim Takaro, who writes alumni notes in Dartmouth Medicine for the class of 1942 at the Medical School. Tim reports a letter received from Frank Brooks disclosing that Frank has "stepped down as acting chief of the gastrointestinal section of the Department of Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania." Catch Roy Rowan at the 50th and ask him about Connections: American Business and the Mob, a book he co-authored with another veteran of Time. Publication by a subsidiary of Time Warner Inc. was cancelled and the question is if this occurred because the book examines events that led to Time's decision to settle a libel suit by paying $400,000 to the Schiavone Construction Company of New Jersey. Look for Gene Stollerman who began his medical career as a pediatrician, became an internist and is now a geriatrician. Gene can tell you how long you're likely to live by application of a social index that measures who takes care of you at home, how much they love you, and how often they're available to you. And don't forget Bill David to hear his tales of world wandering.
You know about George Herman's having gone to Korea in June. But did I tell you about Takaro's trip to the Orient? He and Marilyn attended the ninth World Congress of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, held in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The experience filled them "with new resolve to work harder to try to divert the incredible waste of the arms race, toward meeting some of the massive social and environmental needs of our lonely and much abused planet."
Hats off to Art Hills, his ACAs and the 251 classmates who, together with 14 memorial gifts, contributed a total of $84,077 to the 1990 Alumni Fund. Donations in June, closing out the Fund year, ranged from $1 to more than $1,000. Our performance was so-so, characteristically, but upbeat Art reports that "We go into 1991 with a total of 290 classmates who have given in either 1989 or 1990, which is a good basis for tackling our big 50th Reunion assignment."
Hear, hear.
