I can't tell you what a tremendous pleasure it was to read the November issue of Wah Who Whisper and discover that there's a classmate out there who actually reads this column—or did at least once, anyway—viz. Hon. Ed. Flint Ranney himsel, who, on two occasions referred to tidbits in the magazine and said something strange about white flannel trousers and peaches. The poor guy must have been listening for mermaids. Given the situation in Nantucket in November, he had a good chance of communing directly with them.
It was also good to see that Flint is calling on the likes of Jock Ramaley to come out of hiding and get to the next great reunion, the 35th or 36th, as you wish. Personally, I'm still pushing Cy Field. To the best of my knowledge, however Jocko is even more elusive than Cy, not having been seen nor heard from since he handcuffed himself to the bar in the Phi Delt basement on graduation day, swearing that he would never leave the white palace.
Cube Conroy sent an entire section of a paper, put out by the Union Leader and New Hampshire Sunday News on October 13, devoted entirely to the new Dartmouth- Hitchcock Medical center. It will be worth the trip to Reunion just to see this magnificent new complex. Cube notes that "our new fall reunion headquarters, the Days Inn, is just down the road from the hospital. Hopefully, we won't need its services for a few more years."
Clem Malin reports that he has appointed Wally Pugh to head our class nominations/elections committee. If you haven't already let Wally know what job you want, get in touch soon. They're going like the proverbial hotcakes.
Sadly, we have received news of the death of another classmate, Benson A. Green, who died of cancer on August 16. Benson was president, CEO, and partner for 24 years in the firm of N. Lee Lacy Associates, Ltd., which he built into the world's largest international commercial production company, reputed to have won more "Clios" than any other firm in history. He was the founding president of the National Association of Independent Commercial Producers and has been listed in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World since 1985.
On a considerably happier note, Alan B. Levenson, Esq., was honored at the 24th Annual Rocky Mountain Securities Conference in October, the second-largest securities law conference in the country, second only to the one Alan himself runs in San Diego each year. Chairman of the legal advisory board of the National Association of Securities Dealers, Alan was honored as "scholar, securities lawyer, conference cupporter, and good friend." David M. Abbott Jr. '69, who sent this information along, notes, "During the dinner at the conference, I was able to present Alan and his wife, Joan, with T-shirts from the Dartmouth Co-op stating, 'it's lonely at the top,' the best of the Ivies. Alan certainly reflects the best of Dartmouth, and his class can be proud of him."
On that happy note, I'll sign off till next time. Remember, in the meantime, think Reunion.
