Professor, Cancer Biology, Stanford University
Weissman is pioneering research that may resound through AIDS and cancer research and bone-marrow transplant technology. He and colleagues at SyStemix Inc., a bio-engineering firm that he co-founded, have developed a research mouse endowed with a human immune system. At Stanford Weissman isolated a blood-forming stem cell in mice, which later led to the isolation of the human blood-forming stem cell at SyStemix. He hopes to insert genes into stem cells that will prevent AIDS infections, and to get those cells into clinics for use as a vaccine.
