This issue of the Alumni Magazine focuses on "Dartmouth's Gifts to the World." The class of '65 has been working for almost 30 years, giving back our talents and striving to make the world a better place. Any attempt to point out famous classmates would only succeed in recognizing those who were caught in the spotlight. There are hundreds of us who have been "giving" to the world in our own ways, earning no special accolades, but giving quietly and significantly. Each paragraph contains three random selections of classmates who represent a category.
Service to our nation is a great gift. Ralph Griffin, Zach Hahn, and Pete Frederick are examples of the many classmates who have served the government over the years. There are dozens of others.
Military service has been a special gift. Peter Yatsevitch, Dave Milkowski and Ward Hindman are only three of the men who served our nation. Giving their lives were Dennis Barger, Stephen MacVean, John Seel, Jack Livingston, and others.
Educators give daily as they share their knowledge and skill. From our list of educators the random selection of representatives are Dave Weber, David Tafe, and Joel Sternfeld. Where would Aristotle have been without his teacher, Plato?
The gift of life is one we all treasure. The medical profession has seen many members of the class of '65 give of their talents. John Simmons, Robert Shine, and David Pearsall are only three of the many who have provided better health to the world.
The artist bestows the gift of pleasure. There are hundreds of classmates who have been providers of much satisfaction for those who have seen or heard their work. This column has mentioned many of them in past months, including Chris Knight, Dewitt Jones, and Mike Phillips.
America is the land of opportunity, and the prosperity that we all enjoy is the result of the ambition and creativity of many entrepreneurs. Representing the class of'6s are Gary Bucher, Bob Becker, and Pete Coker.
Service to humanity and religious philosophy is one of the highest callings, shared by Shep Curtis, Michael Mascari and George Ruder.
The list goes on and on. Perhaps the next column will have to be a continuation of "Dartmouth '65's Gifts to the World." If you fit one of the above categories and would like to tell us how you have "given" to society, please write to us.
Be thankful for the gifts you have received and the talents you have been given.
